What is Feminism?
A conflict theory that believes society is conflicted due to gender in a male dominated society
What is Social Control?
Education reinforces the patriarchy through different subject choices that ensure women have less access to top jobs in society.
What is Secondary Socialisation?
Education socialises boys and girls into different gender identities. Girls are encouraged to be passive and communicative while boys are encouraged to take prestigious subjects like maths.
What are Specialist Skills?
The education system passes on gendered skills. Boys are taught the instrumental role (breadwinners) while girls are taught the expressive role (childcare + domestic roles)
What is Sifting and Sorting?
School prepares boys and girls for different roles in society. “Feminine” subjects like drama and food technology are girl dominated vs maths and science that are male dominated
This reinforces gender inequality
What are the criticisms of Social Control?
Functionalists believe that school brings students together regardless of gender
Marxists believe that students are seperated based on class
What are the criticisms of Secondary Socialisation?
Functionalists believe meritocracy allows you to succeed based on effort and ability regardless of gender
Marxists believe that class determines your success more than gender
What are the criticisms of Specialist Skills?
Postmodernists believe that no variety in skills is required
What are the criticisms of Sifting and Sorting?
Girls now outperform boys which makes them more likely to go into higher education
