Female Pelvic Cavity Flashcards
Which two organs does the ureter pass between?
Kidney and urinary bladder
Where does the ureter sit in relation to the peritoneum?
Retroperitoneal
Which vessel does the ureter cross?
Proximal external iliac artery
What 3 things happen at vertebral level L5 - S1 (i.e., sacroiliac joint)?
Bifurcation of common iliac artery
Ureter
Lumbosacral trunk
What is the ampulla of rectum?
The region where the rectum takes a sharp angle
At which vertebral level does sigmoid colon become rectum?
About S3
Which ligament attaches the ovary to the uterus?
Ovarian ligament
What does the uterine/fallopian tube end in?
Fimbria
What is the suspensory ligament of ovary?
Ovarian ligament, ovarian artery and ovarian vein covered in peritoneum (retroperitoneal)
Which ligament passes between the uterus and deep inguinal ring?
Round ligament of uterus
Where does round ligament of uterus go after it exits via the deep inguinal ring?
Labia majora
What contributes to the female gubernaculum?
Round ligament of uterus
Ligament of ovary
What do the branches of the internal iliac artery supply?
Pelvic viscera, wall of pelvic cavity
Exit pelvic cavity to supply gluteal, medial thigh, and perineal regions
Where does the iliolumbar artery run?
Branches off of the internal iliac artery, ascends lateral to lumbar vertebrae
Where does the lateral sacral artery run?
Branches off of the internal iliac artery, and heads medial to lateral aspect of sacrum
Where does the superior gluteal artery exit the pelvic cavity?
Between the lumbosacral trunk and S1; through the greater sciatic foramen at the superior border of piriformis
Where does the inferior gluteal artery exit the pelvic cavity?
Between S1 and S2; through the greater sciatic foramen at the inferior border of piriformis
Where does the internal pudendal artery run?
Through the greater sciatic foramen, at the inferior border of piriformis; anterior/medial to inferior gluteal artery
Where does the middle rectal artery run?
Branches off of either the internal iliac artery or branch of internal pudendal artery
Heads toward rectum, deep in pelvis
Where does the umbilical artery run?
Laterally off of the internal iliac artery, toward anterolateral abdominal wall
What was the function of the umbilical artery?
Carry nutrient and oxygen deficient blood to placenta
Which artery do the superior vesical arteries branch off of?
Umbilical artery
What do the superior vesical arteries supply?
Superior aspect of bladder
Where does the obturator artery run?
It travels anteriorly along lateral wall, piercing obturator internus and passing through the obturator foramen
Where does the uterine artery run?
Branches off of internal pudendal artery
Heads medially along lateral wall of pelvis
Where does the vaginal artery run?
Arises from uterine artery or internal iliac artery; runs between uterus and rectum; supplies inferior bladder and rectum
What are two branches of the uterine artery?
Ovarian and tubal branches
Where does the uterine artery pass in relation to the ureter?
Superiorly
Which artery has an obliterated distal aspect?
Umbilical artery
