female cycles and secondary sexual characteristics Flashcards
pituitary hormones
FSH LH
FSH
Follicle stimulating hormone. stimulates development of follicle and triggers growth of egg in ovary gets the egg ready for ovulation. triggers to start releasing oestrogen.
stimulates sperm production in males
Ovary hormones
Oestrogen Progesterone
LH
triggers the release of an egg in females. usually day 14
instructs testes to secrete male sex hormone testosterone
oestrogen
causes growth and repair in uterine lining. oestrogen levels start rising from day one and peak before day 14. produces female secondary sexual characteristics.
progesterone
if pregnant corpus luteum releases the hormone to com. if not pregnant corpus luteum is destroyed and stops making progesterone. placenta also secretes progesterone later in pregnancy
progesterone inhibits fsh and lh to stop ovulation
rough timeline menstrual cycle
day 1 is first day of menstruation
1-5 menstruation bleeding FSH released and triggers oestrogen to release
6-13 new uterus lining develops as oestrogen is secreted
14 ovulation. LH peaks, egg bursts out and corpus luteum is left behind which starts producing progesterone
14-20 egg can be fertilised if not dies
14-28 blood supply develops in new uterus lining corpus luteum grows and breaks down
