Cell Division Flashcards
use of mitosis
growth and repair in multicellular organisms. used in asexual reproduction
steps of mitosis
interphase: doubling the number of chromosomes in the cell and increasing number of organelles in cells
prophase: chromosomes coil up to form chromatids which join up by the centromeres to form chromosomes and nuclear membrane goes away
metaphase: centrosomes make mitotic spindle and it attaches to the centromeres of the chromosomes.
anaphase: chromosomes are pulled apart. Each chromatid is now doubled.
telophase: two nuclear membranes are now formed around the two copies of the chromosomes.
use of meiosis
production of gametes
products of meiosis
haploid gametes are formed each having a single set of chromosomes.
double round of cell division producing 4 haploid cells.
steps of meiosis
meiosis 1: Interphase
Cancer
an uncontrollable division of cells due to a problem in the genes that regulate the cell cycle which can take nutrients and energy from the body to make new useless cells while using up nutrients that other cells need.
