Female Anatomy Flashcards
What are the Labia Majora?
Large lips that enclose and protect genitalia and organs.
What do the Labia Minora surround?
They are ‘small lips’ inside the labia majora, around the vaginal opening and urethra.
What is the function of Bartholin’s Gland?
Produces mucus secretions and sits behind the vaginal opening.
Where do the labia minora meet?
At the clitoris.
What is notable about the Clitoris?
It is very sensitive and can become erect when stimulated.
What is the role of the Urethra?
Urine empties from the bladder through it.
What is the Mons Pubis?
A fatty tissue area that provides protection for organs and pelvis.
What does the Perineum refer to?
The skin between the vagina and anus which covers the pelvic floor.
What is the Vaginal Introits?
The opening of the vagina, which may contain hymenal remnants.
What is the vaginal canal?
Canal that joins cervix. Allows for conception, birth & menstruation.
The vaginal canal serves multiple reproductive functions, providing a pathway for sperm to enter and for menstruation and childbirth to occur.
What is the function of the cervix?
Neck of the womb. Opens during labour. Keeps uterus/pregnancy protected. Allows exit of menstrual blood.
The cervix plays a crucial role in maintaining pregnancy and facilitating childbirth.
Where are the ovaries located and what is their function?
Glands on either side of the uterus that produce hormones & ovum.
Ovaries are essential for female reproductive health, regulating menstrual cycles and fertility.
What is the uterus commonly referred to as?
‘Womb’. Muscular organ that is home to the developing fetus. It is stretchy and vascular, cervix is attached.
The uterus provides a protective environment for the fetus during pregnancy.
What is the role of the fallopian tubes?
Ovum travels down these to the uterus when released from ovaries.
The fallopian tubes are crucial for the transport of the ovum and for fertilization to occur.
What is the endometrium?
Thickening of lining of the uterus where implantation occurs from fertilised ovum.
The endometrium is vital for a successful pregnancy as it provides the necessary support for the embryo.
