Fellowship of the Ring: Essay Question Flashcards
What is the modern understanding of the word “multicultural?” Can multiculturalism be good? How is it possible for individuals from different ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds to come together to form a true community as we see in the formation of the Fellowship? What was the glue that held them together? Why does our culture’s “community” fall apart?
Multicultural means the presence of, or support for the presence of, several distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society. This is a good thing. Having multiple different ethnic groups and cultures is good for us, because it teaches us how to be able to get along with people whose cultural preferences or traditions are different than ours. The one thing that united the Fellowship was that everyone had the same goal: protecting Middle Earth. Our culture “falls apart” because we don’t all have the same goal.
