Feeding from Thick to Thin Flashcards
how many unwanted horses are reported on an annual basis?
125,000
what causes the unwanted horses?
neglect
loose horses
ignorance of owners
how does BCS affect malnourished horses?
the lower, the less likely they survive
what is the prognosis for starved horses?
poor when more than 50% of BW has been lost
once CHO and fat sources are depleted in the body, what is used next?
protein to attempt to keep surviving
what happens in refeeding syndrome and when does it occur?
occurs in the first 3-7 days after rescue
calories cause an insulin spike and electrolyte shift which causes RBCs collapse and bad oxygen transfer
also electrolyte imbalances
concentrated calories affect what organs/systems?
kidney, heart, and respiratory failure
what is the protocol for the first 1-3 days in the UC Davis diet?
1 lb high quality alfalfa hay every 4 hours and have vet come out (6 lb alfalfa a day)
days 4-10 in UC Davis diet?
slowly increase amount per meal and decrease the frequency by day 6 4 lb every 8 hours for a total of 13 lb. alfalfa a day through 3 feedings
days 10-onward for the UC Davis diet?
slowly increase amount and decrease frequency but feed as much as they will eat once the vet gives them the okay
anticipated results of the UC Davis diet?
energy levels back in about 2 weeks, reanimation, restore within 3-5 mo. feed high fat low NCS diet
additional considerations of malnourished horses?
teeth and worms
obese horses are more susceptible to what?
laminitis, insulin resistance, EMS, lipomas, fat pads and adipokines (become chemically active and act as an organ)
EMS is seen in what horses and causes what?
overweight horses, easy keepers
causes liptoxticity which is the accumulation of fat in tissues and can become toxic
nuchal crest adiposity can help us ID what?
metabolic problems
