Fecalysis and Skin scraping Examination Flashcards
Diagnostic techniques used to detect gastrointestinal and dermatologic issues by analyzing fecal and skin samplsz
Fecalysis and skin scraping
Purposes of fecalysis
- Detecting infections
- Assessment of digestive functions
- Proper treatment
- Evaluate livestock and production animals
Fecal scoring: Very hard and dry; requires much effort to expel from body; no residue left on the ground when picked up. Expelled as individual pellets
Score 1
Fecal scoring: Firm, but not hard; should be pliable, segmented appearance; little to no residue left when left on the ground
Score 2
Fecal scoring: log- like; little to no segmentation visible +; moist surface; leaves residues when picked up
Score 3
A qualitative test for the detection of nematode and cestode eggs (also coccidia cysts) in the feces
Flotation technique
specific gravity that the nematode and cestode egg will float
1.10-1.20
the specific gravity that the trematodes requires
1.30-1.35
What are the different floatation fluids and their specific gravity,
- sugar Floatation - 1.27
- Salt solution - 1.18-1.2
- Zinc sulfate solution - 1.18
a diagnostic assessment commonly
employed in veterinary practice to evaluate the level of proteolytic
enzymes (enzymes that break down proteins) in an animal’s fecal
sample
-Trypsin and chymotrypsin
Fecal proteolytic Activity
-used in Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency EPI / maldigestion diagnosis
A quantitative technique used to determine the estimate worm
burdens by counting the number of eggs or larvae per gram of
feces.
McMaster Counting
It is use to isolate lungworm larvae from fecal samples, or to isolate infective larvae from fecal cultures
Baermann’s Method
It is a hand-held device that emits long-wave
ultraviolet radiation through a nickel or cobalt glass filter. The filter is opaque to all light except a band between 320 and 400 nm. Fluorescence occurs when shorter
wavelengths are absorbed and radiation of
longer wavelengths (visible light) is emitted.
Wood’s lamp
handheld grooming tool that offers an
affordable and nontoxic way to detect and remove fleas from your dog.
