Features of Effective Teams Flashcards
Team Size
Teams of around 4-6 are the most effective, because if a team is too large, members may not all have the opportunity to contribute, but if a team is too small, the danger exists of only one or 2 people dominating the team. Therefore, a good team size is effective as it balances out the roles of all the members.
Team Membership
Effective teams are made up of members that have a range of personalities, interests, age and experience, so some common ground will help team members bond, however a variety is needed to ensure member bring in different perspectives and thinking.
Team Development
Effective teams are made up of a group of employees who have worked together for a while and should know each other fairly well and have developed some social connections and will therefore be more settled, confident and more productive.
Leadership
Effective teams have an effective leader who can motivate the team, minimise conflict and support the team to achieve its collective goals.
Clear Goals/Roles
In effective teams goals are clear and roles are defined for each member because there is clear structure and purpose.
Strong Communication
Effective teams communicate regularly to ensure there is strong commitment and collaboration between team members. This helps ensure that everyone feels like a team member and everyone is clear what their task is and how the team is progressing towards their shared goals.
