Fatty Acid Synthesis Flashcards
Process by which saturated fatty acid Palmitate is formed
Excess carbohydrates are converted to fatty acids creating a store of energy able to be broken down for future energy
Fatty acid synthesis
Acetyl coa cannot be shuttled from mitochondria to
Cytoplasm to be converted to fatty acids
From the mitochondria, acetyl coa is converted into this subtrate that can be shuttled to the cytoplasm for production of fatty acids
Citrate
Citrate shuttle
Step 1
Citrate leaves mitochondria through citrate shuttle to the cytoplasm
Citrate -> Acetyl Coa by the enzyme
ATP Citrate lyase
Step 2
Acetyl CoA -> Malonyl Coa by enzyme
Rate limiting enzyme
Cofactor:
Acetyl Coa carboxylase
CO2
Fatty ACCid synthesis
Step 3
Malonyl Coa -> Palmitate by the enzyme
Cofactor:
Fatty acid Synthase
NADPH
Rate limiting enzyme of Fatty acid synthesis
Acetyl Coa Carboxylase
Acetyl Coa -> Malonyl Coa
Stimulates fatty acid synthesis
Insulin
Citrate
Inhibits fatty acid synthesis
Glucagon
Palmitoyl CoA
