Monogamy
One husband and one wife
Most common in Europe, US and most Christian cultures
Serial monogamy
A series of monogamous marriages
Found in areas of high divorce rates
Arranged marriage
Marriage arranged by parents to match their children with a partner of a similar background and status
Polygamy
Marriage to more than one partner at the same time
Polygyny
One husband and two or more wives
Polyandry
One wife, two or more husbands
(more common than polygyny)
Nuclear family
Two generations: parents and children living in the same househole
Cereal packet family
a functionalist concept which argues that the idealised version of the family is the nuclear family of mother, father an two children.
Extended family
All kin including and beyond the nuclear family
Reconstituted family
Step family. One or both partners previously married, with children from the marriage
Lone parent family
One parent and children
Same sex family
Homosexual couple and children
Cohabitation
Living together and having a sexual relationship without marriage
Boomerang children
Grown up children who return to live with parents
Symmetrical family
Authority and household tasks shared between both partners
