when france and Habsburg made peace in 1538 England was left isolated and when excommunicated in 1538 feared crusade
persuaded Henry marry Anne of Cleves- German princess

Henry growing older and more paranoid
promotions and success created jealousy from others in court
from humble background
failure of Anne of Cleves marriage- weakened relationship
treason cases in 1530s 883 but only 329 executed- used law bend to will/ remove threats
position relied on control of rival factions

Henry became infatuated with Catherine Howard, niece of Norfolk
accused Cromwell of Heresy and infatuation but believed
accused Cromwell of being too slow when divorce from Anne

marriage disaster Henry found her unattractive
unnecessary as while France and Spain recovered- soon at war again
not complete failure as Cromwell still reward the Earl of Essex- unusual someone not noble
swift annuellement of marriage- King distracted- enemies took advantage
