Factors Affecting Reaction Rates (17.2) Flashcards
- Describe the effects of chemical nature, physical state, temperature, concentration, and catalysis on reaction rates.
Chemical Nature
The identity of substances affecting how fast they react.
Physical state during reaction?
The form (solid, liquid, gas) that influences how they interact during the reaction.
Does surface area affect rate of reactions?
Yes, more surface area (smaller particles) speed up reactions.
Does temperature affect reaction rate?
Yes, increase in temperature also increases rate of reaction, because more kinetic energy is being brought upon for molecules to move around more.
Does concentration matter for the reaction of chemicals?
Yes the greater concentration the higher the reaction rate, generally.
Catalyst
Speeds up a reaction by lowering the energy barrier (activation energy) without sacrificing the change in process. Helps convert products more easily and quickly.
Heterogeneous Reaction
A reaction involving reactants in different phases, such as solid and liquid or gas.
