Eyes Flashcards
Pre-septal Cellulitis
Infection of the eyelids and periocular tissues that is anterior to the orbital septum. May be treated outpatient.
What are the orbital and periorbital infections in increasing severity?
Preseptal cellulitis (periorbital), post-septal cellulitis (orbital), subperiosteal abscess, orbital abscess, cavernous sinus thrombosis.
Post-septal Cellulitis
Infection of the orbital soft tissues posterior to the orbital septum. Treated inpatient with IV abx.
Endophthalmitis
Infection of the globe.
What differentiates pre-septal and post-septal cellulitis?
CT scan. Presentation and labs are not helpful.
Pre-septal cellulitis - most common organisms
Staph aureus, S. epidermidis, Strep, anaerobes
When to get a CT scan to differentiate between pre and post-septal cellulitis
Decreased ocular motility, other signs of orbital involvement, young child with unreliable examination, concern for post-septal - CT with contrast
What is most commonly damaged in orbital wall fractures?
Orbital floor most easily damaged; give abx if fracture extends to an infected sinus.
