Eye Pharmocology Flashcards
What controls the ciliary muscle?
Contracted by the parasympathetics to focus the eye
How does the ANS affect pupil diameter?
Sympathetic increase
Parasympathetic decrease
How does the sympathetic nervouse system affect aqueous humor accumulation?
Mostly stimulated by the sympathetics by beta receptors but also can inhibit it through alpha2 receptors
Where do all sympathetics come off of?
T1 to L5
What happens with Horner syndrome in relation to the pupil size?
The sympathetic nerves are not transmitting so the pupils are small
What is mydriasis?
Contraction of the pupillary dilator muscle
What way does the sympathetic nervous system control the pupillary dilator muscle and the superior tarsal muscle?
By release of norepinephrine which acts on the alpha 1 receptors
How is relaxation of the ciliary muscle for distant vision controlled?
Through beta2 stimulation by circulating epinephrine. But that doesn’t do much so the ciliary muscle is controlled mostly by the parasympathetics
What does the parasympathetic nervouse system use for receptors?
Muscarinic
What eye functions does the parasympathetic system control?
Ciliary muscle contraction - near vision
Constricts pupil
Enhances drainage of aqueous humor
What does atropine do?
Makes your pupil bigger
Inhibits the parasympathetic nervous system
What are sympathomimetics?
Things that stimulate or mimic stimulation of sympathetic nerve
How do you eliminate the response of sympathetic stimulation?
Norepinephrine re uptake
What blocks norepinephrine reuptake?
Cocaine
Therefore it is a good test if there is norepinephrine release to tell if the sympathetic nervous system is working
How is dopamine synthesized?
From tyrosine - to dopa - dopamine
What does amphetamine do?
Reverses extra neuronal uptake pump of norepinephrine
Helps tell if the Postganglionic nerve is there or not
How does norepinephrine negatively feedback?
By acting on alpha2 receptors on the preganglionic neuron
