Extreme WX. NATOPS CH. 14 Flashcards
How does extreme cold temp effect aircraft material?
- Rubber, plastic, and fabric material stiffen, and may crack or even shatter, when loads are applied
- Oils congeal and grease hardens
- Dissimilar metals contract differently
- Moisturizer freezes in critical areas
- Tire, landing gear strut and accumulator air px decrease as temp decreases
During cold WX, what may a difficult to move PCL indicate?
A difficult to move PCL may be indicative of a frozen PAS or PAS cable. DO NOT force PCL movement.
During Cold WX, when do you expect to see an OIL FILTER BYPASS caution?
The impending bypass indicator has a thermal lockout below 38*C to prevent the PDI button from popping.
What should you be aware of when starting an engine that has been exposed to low temps overnight?
- Watch for a ride in TGT within 40 sec
- If no rise in TGT, prime engine and attempt another start
- If no overboard fuel fellow during prime, inspect for ice in dumps and filters
Time for TA battery charging when in air temps are above 5*C?
Normal charging time required before unfolding the array or transmitting actively is approx 10 min after mission power applied (ST/R powered on)
Time for TA battery charging when in air temps are 5*C or below?
Up to 45 min may be req
What is the min usable charge of the sonar transducer battery in flight?
10%
How long should it take for the TA battery to reach at least 60%?
1 hour after mission power applied in temps above 5C or 1.5 hours for temps below 5C
Torque available reduction and fuel flow increase with ECS on HOT?
Approx 5% per engine and 45 lbs per hour per engine
APU fuel consumption if powering ECS?
Approx 150 lbs per hour
When and why should ENG ANTI-ICE switched be turned on?
When OAT is 5*C or below in visible moisture.
When engines are operating in those the conditions, the engine inlet guide canes and the inlet are susceptible to icing.
What might high pitched noise with no secondary indications or power loss indicate?
Ice damage to the T700 engine
Where will initial ice accumulation be noted?
On the windshield wiper arms, mirror support brackets, main landing gear, and external stores.
What shall you do when entering visible moisture at ambient temps of 5*C or below?
All anti-ice and de-ice systems shall be turned on prior to entering.
Ice accumulation torque values
- An increase of over 10% matches torque should result in urgent consideration to vacate the environment, unless the task is considered essential. If torque required increases 20% above that required for level flight, at the airspeed prior to entering icing, exit icing environment or land as soon as possible.
- Additional torque increase up to 14% per engine may be experienced due to ice buildup during normal operation of the blade de-ice system.
- Ice accumulation resulting in 20% torque increase ( 10% per eng) indicates that normal autorotational rotor RPM may not be attainable should dual eng failure occur.
