Experiments Flashcards
What is an independent variable ?
Independent variable is the the one that changes and has a direct effect
What is the dependent variable ?
It is the one that you measure
What is the extraneous variable ?
Variables that aren’t the independent variable but could effect the results therefore need to be controlled
What is a cofounding variable ?
Any variable that is not controlled by the researchers that could ruin the results
Definition of a laboratory experiment ?
Conducted under highly controlled conditions
Strengths of laboratory experiments ?
Easy to replicate
Precise control over iv , ev
Weaknesses of laboratory experiments ?
Low ecological validity
Demand characteristics may cause bias results
Definition of a field experiment ?
Done in every day environments
Strengths of field experiments ?
Natural behaviour
Less demand characteristics
Weaknesses of field experiments ?
Less control over ev
Definition of quasi experiment ?
In a natural environment with a naturally occurring IV
Strengths of quasi experiments ?
Natural behaviour
Less demand characteristics
Can be used in situations which it would be ethically unacceptable to manipulate the iv
Weaknesses of quasi experiments ?
Time consuming
No control over iv and ev
Hard to establish relationship between iv and dv
Definition of independent measures design ?
Different participants are used in each condition
Strengths of independent measures design ?
No order effects as more than one group
Less chance of demand characteristics by guessing aims
