Bandura (developmental) Flashcards
What was the aim of the study ?
To demonstrate that if children were witness to an aggressive act displayed by an adult they would imitate this aggressive behaviour when given the opportunity
What was the sample?
- 72 participants
- 36 boys, 36 girls
- age range 3-5 years old
- mean age 4.4 years
- from Stanford uni , nursery school , America
What was the pre procedure?
Children were observed on their natural levels of aggression
Carried out by a nursery teacher and an experimenter using four 5 point rating scales e.g verbal aggression 1-5, physical aggression 1-5 etc
They did this to check natural aggression levels to balance out the aggression in each sub condition
What was the phase 1 Procedure ?
modelling phase (10 mins)
All children tested individually
An adult would go tot he opposite corner of the room where there was a table, chair, tinker toy set and a 5 foot inflatable bobo doll.
The model would behave in one of two ways ( depending on what condition the child is in)
The three conditions were aggressive, non aggressive and control each with 24 p’s
What happened in phase 1 (aggressive) ?
The aggressive condition, after 1 min the model would be aggressive physically and verbally hitting the doll with a mallet etc and shouting pow and boom
What happened is phase 1 ( non aggressive) ?
The model assembled the tink toy set in a quite subdued manner and ignored the bobo doll
What happened in phase 1(control) ?
Did not experience and exposure to a role model
What happened in phase 2 ?
This was the mild aggression arousal it lasted approx 2 mins
The child was take to a room with attractive toys like a fire truck and were allowed to play with them
After about 2 mins of playing the experimenter told them they were the best toys and they were reserved for the other children
This gave them something to be aggressive about
What happened in phase 3 ?
This was the test for imitation and it was 20 mins long
The children were put in a room with a one way mirror and the experimenter watched the children
There was a variety of non aggressive toys like a tea set and aggressive toys like a mallet.
Time sampling was used every 5 seconds and recorded onto a checklist the behaviours they saw
The checklist contained 4 categories, imitative aggression, partially imitative aggression, non imitative aggression and no aggression
What were the 3 independent variables?
Behaviour of models
Sex of child
Sex of role model
What were the hypothesise?
- copy role models (aggressive- aggressive)
- copy role models ( non aggressive - non aggressive)
- copy same sex model to a greater degree than an opposite sex role model
- boys will show more imitative aggression than girls
What can we conclude from banduras research ?
Role models have impacts
There is evidence for the social learning theory
Children’s behaviour can be influenced by external things such as role models
Implications of this study in the real world ?
Age ratings
What was the research method ?
Lab because the iv is manipulated
Could agrue quasi because it includes both boys and girls
How valid was this research ?
Controlled the variables = less extraneous variables
However it has low ecological validity
