Correlations Flashcards
1
Q
What is a positive correlation ?
A
The values of both co - variables
Increase / decrease together
2
Q
What is a negative correlation ?
A
One variable increases the other decreases.
3
Q
What is no correlation ?
A
If there is no correlation between the variables they are said to be uncorrelated / no correlation - no relation ship exists
4
Q
Strengths of correlation?
A
Can see the strength of a relationship between variables
May suggest further research
Provide quantitative data
5
Q
Weaknesses of correlations ?
A
Cannot assume cause and effect
We don’t always get the details behind the given data
6
Q
How to work out spearman’s rho
A
- Rank the data separately for each variable
- find the difference between each participants first and second rankings
- Square the difference
- Add up the squared differences
- Use the formaula
- Compare observed value with the critical values table
- Write a statement of significance
