experimental design Flashcards
what are the three types of experimental design?
- repeated measures
- independent groups
- matched pairs
what is repeated measures?
where all participants in an experiment will experience all conditions of an experiment
what is independent groups?
when separate groups of participants experience different conditions of an experiment. 2 levels of IV and each group only experiences 1
what is matched pairs?
participants are paired together on a variable relevant to the experiment. the pairs are then split until there are 2 groups
what is a strength of repeated measures?
- removes bias
- no participant variables
- less expensive due to needing less participants
what is a limitation of repeated measures?
- order effects
- takes longer
- risk of demand characteristics
what is a strength of independent groups?
- no order effects
- less expensive
- takes less time
- no demand characteristics
- allows for randomisation
what is a weakness of independent groups?
- participant variables
- bias
- increased chance of confounding variables
- more expensive
what is a strength of matched pairs?
- limited order effects
- less demand characteristics
- less participant variables
what is a limitation of matched pairs?
- can’t match people exactly
- less economic
- more time consuming
what are order effects?
the order of the conditions having an effect on participants behaviour
- practice effect
- fatigue effect
- boredom effect
how can you counter balance order effects?
half participants do condition A then B and the other half do B then A
(ABBA)
