Exam III Thigh and Leg Flashcards
What is the pes anserinus? “goose foot”
SSG
Common insertion for sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus tendons, each are innervated by diff. nerves
Sartorius = femoral n.
Semitendinosus =
Gracilis = Obturator N.
Where do the quadriceps muscles join at?
Quadriceps tendon
What is the result of a groin pull?
Strain/Stretching/Tearing of proximal attachement of thigh adductor/flexor muscles
Groin - junction b/w trunk and thigh
What is the importance of the femoral triangle and what are the contents and borders?
Allows access to major artery (femoral artery)
N.A.V.E.L.
Femoral nerve and branches
Femoral artery and branches
Femoral vein and its tributaries
Femoral canal (empty space) with deep inguinal lymph nodes (medial)
Sartorius, Inguinal ligament, Pectineus, Adductor longus
What is the importance of the femoral sheath? What are the components?
Allows femoral vessels to glide smoothly deep to inguinal ligament during hip joint movements
Inferior prolongation of transversalis fascia
Femoral artery (lateral)
Vein (intermediate)
empty space/femoral canal (medial)
What muscles does the femoral nerve innervate? (4)
Anterior Muscles
Quadriceps femoris
Iliacus
Sartorius
Pectineus
What nerves account for cuteaneous innervation of the thigh and leg?
Anterior thigh = anterior cutaneous branches of femoral N.
Anterior leg = saphenous nerve (anterior & medial knee and leg, medial foot)
Lateral thigh = lateral femoral cutaneous nerve
What nerves may be affected during anterior hip dislocation?
Femoral Nerve
Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve
Compression along lateral femoral cutaneous nerve = Meralgia paresthetica
What artery is the primary blood supply to the thigh?
Deep femoral artery; first major branch of femoral artery
What is the main supply of blood to the femoral head and neck? What are retinacular vessels?
Medial circumflex femoral artery - passes b/w iliopsoas and pectineus
Femoral neck vessels
What is the clinical relevance of the saphenous vein?
Drains into the femoral vein
Can be used to administer blood electrolytes, drugs, etc. Coronary bypass surgery
For access to the venous system
Which muscles act on extending the leg? (4) What nerve innervates them?
Quadriceps
Rectus Femoris
Vastus Lateralis
Vastus Intermedias
Vastus Medialis
= Femoral Nerve
What are the anterior thigh muscles? (7) What nerve innervates them?
Quadriceps muscles
Sartorius
Iliopsoas
Pectineus
Innervation = Femoral Nerve
What are the two functions of the rectus femoris?
Extend leg
Flex thigh
What muscles act to flex the thigh? (7)
Rectus femoris
Iliopsoas
All Medial Thigh
