NREM
The stage of sleep where it is between sleep and wakefulness, relaxed but still aware of surroundings, involuntary muscle jerking may occur and waken the person, normally lasts only minutes, person can be aroused easily, constitutes about only 5% of total sleep
Stage 1
The stage of sleep where person falls into a stage of sleep, person can be aroused with relative ease, stage constitutes about 50-55% of sleep; REM sleep occurs here
Stage 2
Stage of sleep where depth of sleep increases and arousal becomes increasingly difficult; stage composes about 10% of sleep
Stage 3
Stage of sleep where a person reaches greatest depth of sleep which is called delta sleep, arousal from sleep is difficult; Physiological changes include:slow brain waves,pulse and respiratory rates decrease, BP decreases, muscles are relaxed, metabolism decreases and body temp is low, constitutes about 10% of sleep
