exam 4 Flashcards
concept
allows us to identify any object with which we are familiar and quickly bring to mind that object’s attributes, how it is likely to behave, and how we should interact with it.
grandmother theory
is the notion that your mental representation of a thing is stored by a single neuron, so that every time you encounter or think about that thing, that neuron is activated, and if you lose that neuron you completely forget about that thing.
quiroga
tested epilepsy patients pre brain surgery. Implanted electrodes to monitor seizures . showed hundreds of different images neurons reacted specifically to all animals, only to food specifically and reacted to places as well.
exemplar approach
approach that claims that we create a memory that includes every individual item we have encountered with similar items
prototype approach
approach that claims that we create a memory that stores an average of all the individual items we have encountered
why does the definitional approach not work
Not all of the members of everyday categories have the same features. Most fish have gills, fins, and scales. Sharks don’t have scales, yet they are still categorized as fish.
