exam 2 Flashcards
What is memory
storage of info temporary or permanent
What do memory systems do?
encode store, and retrieve info
Atkinson and shiffrin modal
What are controlled processes?
Active processes controlled by a person rehearsal, memorization strategies
what is sensory memory
stores info briefly allows other processes to extract input for later use. 1/2 second memory fades quickly
Sperling whole report
reported all letters presented for 5 millisecond people got 4-5 right after = Stm
Sperling partial report procedure
A cue was indicated to which letter to report people on average got 9 letters = sensory memory
Stm
lasts longer than sensory memory 15-30 seconds stores or as long as you keep rehearsing items stores more meaningful info than sensory memory hold between 5-9 items
What is chunking
allows us to store more than 1 item more efficiently you combine many items at once
Conrad tests
auditory code visually presented a series of letters participants had to recall letters in order. Looked at errors made by sound
Posner & keele
presented letters one after another, participants said if the letters were the same or different letters. Visual code took participants longer to answer when the shape was different.
Shulman semantic tests
visually presented a list of words. they presented the subjects with a word and asked whether it had been on the list. Participants were asked if the word was on the list. synonym error subjects confused words like talk for speak
Problems with the STM as a shelving system 3
1 word lenght longer words are difficult to remember 2 phonological similarity test - list of similar words are more difficult to remember 3 articulatory suppression say something repeatedly while listening to a list of words
Phonological loop
takes in auditory messages limited amount of time before it decays forever2-4 seconds subvocal rehearsal repeat to self
3 parts for working memory
1 central executive controls everything, 2 phonological loop audio encoding, 3 visual spatial sketch pad visual and spatial info. multiple parts and can not process similar types of info presented at 1 time
