Q

what are the two types of rehearsal and the differences between them

A

Maintenance rehearsal is repeating things to oneself without adding any meaning to the info. Elaborative rehearsal adds meaning to the info, by making connections to other info learned or by connecting them to prior experiences. The levels of processing discusses the idea that how the encoding of info is impacted when we process info in a deep level- add meaning to the info we receive, or at a shallow level there is little to no meaning to the info.

Q

The what is the difference between synaptic consolidation and systems consolidation

A

Synaptic consolidation involves changes at the synaptic level and is fast occurring within minutes or hours. Systematic consolidation is the rewiring of the neural brain network and usually involves days or years to change.

Q

what is encoding specificity and give an example

A

Encoding specificity is the idea that encoding will and retrieval will be better when the original encoding and retrieval occur in the same location. Ex if you encode info at home, then you attempt to recall that info at a later time, retrieval of that info will be easier when at home because that is where you originally encoded the info.

Q

what are the parts of declaritive explicit memory and define each

A

conscious memories and they are episodic memory has to do with personal events or experiences and semantic has to do with concepts and facts

6
Q

Name the 3 parts of implicit memories or unconscious memory

A

1 Procedural has to do with skills we learn, repetition priming has to do with how a previous stimulus can impact future behavior when presented to us again 3 emotional conditioning, our emotional responses are classically conditioned

Q

What are the two levels of processing theory

A

deep processing we add meaning to our info make connections easier to recall at a later time, shallow processing we dont add meaning to our info we don’t pay much attention to it

Q

Why is generation effect good for LTM

A

it is good because it allows us to write info we are presented in our words. When we write info in our own words we tend to make deeper connections to it and most likely can store info into LTM

Q

What are some effective studying tips?

A

Elaborate on info, generate your own meaning to word and crate your own questions, take breaks spacing effect study short times and take breaks in between and be an active note taker, do not write things down word for word

Q

What part of Hm’s memory stayed intact and what part did not

A

HM’s STM/WM stayed intact while HM’s LTM declarative memories did not stay intact.

Q

What is the difference between recall tasks and recognition tasks

A

recall tasks people attempt to remember what they saw, whole recognition people tend to answer yes or no if word or item was on a list.

Q

Sachs study

A

studied semantic meaning in LTM people heard a passage and were later asked to recall and a sentence if the passage, people generally remembered the meaning of the sentence but not the passage word for word

Q

Long term potentiation

A

the repeated firing of neurons at a specific synaptic location firing rate increases meaning more transmitters can go through the synapse. repeated firing between neurons makes connections stronger, more surface area = more neurotransmitters firing.

What are retrieval cues

A

can be a word or idea or stimulus that helps you remember info

17
Q

state dependent learning

A

is when your internal mood is the same when you originally encoded the words and retrieve the words.

18
Q

Retrograde amnesia

A

inability to recall information from the past after an injury

19
Q

anterograde amnesia

A

the inability to form new memories after an injury.

What was the importance of Hm

A

scientists studied Hm over the years and found out more about the functions of the Hippocampus by studying Hm
