Lymphatic Filarial Worm - Nematode Wuchereria bancrofti

Wuchereria bancrofti:
Adult worm

A
  • Found primarily in lymphatic vessels
  • Nuclear column (the cells that constitute the body of the microfilaria), visualized individually, and do NOT extend to the tip of the tail
  • Nocturnal periodicity (10pm, to 2am)

Wuchereria bancrofti:
Symptom

A
  • After bite from infected moquito - Anopheles or Aedes
  • Elephantiasis (blockage of lymph drainage, lymphedema)
  • Hydrocele is most common symptom of infection - swelling of scrotum
  • Fever, iguinal or axillary lymphadenopathy testicular and or inguinal pain, skin exfoliation, limb ± genital swelling > 6 months to develop then to elephatiasis

Symptom

  • After bite from infected mosquito - Mansonia and Aedes
  • Tropical pulmonary eosinophilia
  • Cough, wheezing, dyspnea
  • Incraesed eosinophils

African Eye Worm:
Symptoms

A
  • Tabanid fly (Deerflies, mando or mangrove flies)
  • Episodic angioedema (calabar swellings) Transient swelling marking path of adult microfilaria migration
  • Diagnosis - microfilaria from thick or thin blood smears or adults in the subconjuctiva
  • Diurnal periodicity (10am to 2pm)
