What is the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia?
Dementia is a symptom (memory loss), Alzheimer’s is a disease.
If you took a pt with Alzheimer’s disease and looked at their brain, what would you see?

What is sundowning?
Late-day (dusk) confusion. Causes anxiety, agitation, and disorientation.
What are some possible factors for sundowning?
- end-of-day exhaustion
- an upset in internal body clock, confusing night and day
- reduced lighting and increased shadows
- disorientation due to inability to separate dreams from reality when sleeping
- less need for sleep, which is common among older adults
When caring for pt’s, remember the three B’s:
Bathroom, Beverage, Bread
