Exam 2. Viruses Flashcards
Intro to viruses
Virus
Associated with evolution of organisms because they can transfer genes
obligate intracellular
Acellular
genetic material surrounded by a protein coat
Not considered because they cant reproduce on their own, they need another cell to reproduce them
Some bacteria are also obligate intracellular, but because they have more of a prokaryote structure are considered living (Chlamydia and Rickettsia)
Nucleic Acid
can be either DNA or RNA but not both
double or single stranded
Nucleocapsid
Simple virus
capsid and nucleic acid
Capsid
Made of capsomeres
Helical
Continues helix of capsomeres forming a cylindrical nucleocapsid
Icosahedral
3D
20 sided and 13 even corners
Might be most efficient shape
Envelope
Protection and attachment
mostly in animals viruses
acquired when virus leaves host cell
spikes outside
Complex virus
Bacteriophage
Animal virus multiplication
Adsorption Penetration ( fusion-envelope fuses with membrane or endocytosis- entire virus is engulfed) Uncoating Synthesis Assembly Release
Latent virus
Temperate viruses
in cell for long time and cause persistent infection
Lysogenic cycle
not good for therapy
Bacteriophage cycle
Adsorption Penetration Replication Assembly and maturation Lysis and release
Oncovirus
Mammalian virus that can cause cancer
Lysogenic cycle
Temperate virus
protect the cell from other lytic virus from entering
Results in spread or the virus without killing the host cell
Some pathogens are more virulent because they have prophages
Prophage
When virus is retained and copied during normal cell division
in-vitro
Cell tissue cultures
