What are the underlying processes of intermediate stuttering?
Classical conditioned “tension response” more evident, conditioned frustration becomes intense fear, avoidance conditioning brings more escape and secondary behaviors, more severe/frequent
What are examples of escape behaviors?
Head nod, blinking, lip smacking
Stage of stuttering characterized more by AGE of stutterer than “severity” of stuttering, stuttering patterns are over learned, person considers themselves a stutterer

Blocks, tense and rapid repetitions, avoidance stutterer

Out of their control, helplessness, anger, intense frustration, shaped by years of conditioning, stuttering is part of their identity

Original developmental & environmental influences are not as influential, conditioning of these habits make it automatic, negative self-concept as an “impaired speaker,” assume others have same response to him
