Exam 2 Part 5 Flashcards
Do you target 1 speech sound or multiple speech sounds in the cycles approach?
1 speech sound at a time, go to the next speech sound even though they may or may not master the sound
A pattern is the focus for __-__ weeks, with a different sound each week
2-4 weeks
Each sound is targeted for __-minutes per cycle
60
When is the cycle complete?
When all phonological patterns have been treated
How many cycles do we need in the cycles approach to increase intelligibility?
3-6
What are the primary targets in the cycles approach?
Syllableness, word structure, /s/ clusters, anterior/posterior contrasts when fronting or backing, liquids
What are the secondary targets in the cycles approach?
Palatals, consonant clusters, singleton stridents (/s/, /f/), voicing contrasts
Why are /s/ clusters a primary target in the cycles approach?
Tend to be common errors that affect intelligibility the most
What does a typical cycles approach session look like?
Review speech sound, listening (auditory bombardment), target word cards, production practice, stimulability probing (if the child misses the word, have them try to produce it), listening (more auditory bombardment), phonological awareness (discriminate one picture from another), home program (homework)
What is the cycles approach suited for?
Used for children with multiple speech sound errors
Therapy approach used for children with more mild phonological errors and other linguistic deficits (expressive language deficits)
Broader based language approach
What are the steps of the broader based language approach?
Organize environment/stimuli to maximize the ability of the clinician to systematically manipulate linguistic complexity, provide communicative opportunity, provide feedback directly related to the child’s communication
