Primary Causes of BI for infants, toddlers and early elementary:
Infants: abuse and neglect
Toddlers: abuse and falls
Early elm.: falls, pedestrian accidents
Primary causes for Brain injury for late elementary/ middle school and high school or older:
Late elem/middle school: pedestrian- bicycle accident/motor
High school: motor vehicle accidents
What is an acquired brain injury?
An injury to brain that is internal or external
What is a open head TBI?
Brain penetrated by external object. Ex gunshot.
What is the most common symptom of open head TBI?
seizures
What is an closed head TBI?
brain not penetrated but damaged inside. Ex. drowning, strangulation
Which is the most common TBI?
An open brain one
What is coup/ Contracoup
Bruising, bleeding in parts of brain (whiplash) . Tearing and shearing of neurons
Some secondary affects of coup:
Bleeding, swelling, lack of oxygen to brain
What are some predictors of outcome after BI?
Duration of coma
Age
Location of injury
Support systems
Definition of coma
State of unconsciousness in which a person cant be aroused and does not respond to painful stimuli
Glasgow Coma Scale
The lowest number rate is 3 which is no responsiveness and an alert survivor can obtain a highest of 15.
What are the 3 categories of Glasgow?
- Eye opening response
- Verbal response
- Motor response
To be classified in a coma, that number is that on scale?
3-8 on scale.
