Exam 2: Cardiac Function Flashcards
Vasovagal syncope
fainting because of drop in HR/BP, this can be due to bearing down, emotional distress, seeing blood, heat
What is a 12 lead EKG?
12 views of the heart from 12 different POVs
What is electrocardiology?
pattern recording, Lead II shows characteristic waves and intervals, measures electrical function
What is the P wave?
atrial depolarization
What is the PR interval?
time from when atria start depolarizing to the time the ventricles start depolarizing
What is the QRS complex?
ventricular depolarization - need most power here to get blood out of heart
What is the T wave?
ventricular repolarization
What does ANP do?
Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a cardiac hormone -> atrial stretching, excretion of sodium and volume reduction
What does BNP do?
Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) -> ventricular distension, excretion of sodium and volume reduction
What are clinical tests of cardiac function?
MRI/CT, Echocardiography, SPECT, Angiography or coronaries, bloodwork
