Exam 2: Alcohol Flashcards
Ethyl Alcohol (Ethanol) is most commonly found in what type of alcohol?
The alcohol that we consume
What are the two types of ways alcohol can be produced?
Fermentation and Distillation
Describe the basic components of Fermentation:
A sugar, either from a grain or fruit, is added to yeast and mixed with water to create a chemical reaction
What are the results of Fermentation?
Ethanol and Carbon Dioxide
What category of alcohol is the result of Fermentation?
Wine and Beer
What will happen to yeast once the alcohol content reaches above 15%
It will die
Describe the process of Distillation:
The fermented beverages are heated at high temperatures. The vapor from that is collected and cooled. This vapor is the alcohol that we consume.
What alcohol percentage is usually considered intolerant to people?
40% alcohol
What is the difference between the Volume vs the Proof of a drink
The volume will describe the alcohol to water ratio ( 10% alcohol = 10 : 90 water) while proof is the percentage x2 (40% = 80 proof)
How is alcohol usually absorbed?
Orally and absorbed mostly in the upper intestines
What are some factors that will influence alcohols absorption?
- Amount consumed
- The Type
- The concentration
- Carbonation (speeds up absorption)
- Did you eat anything before
- Your build
