What are some ways to practice safety in animal handling?
Use muzzles, double leashes, and separating problem animals from the group

In the surgery prep room on the end of the center island towards the surgery room

What should you do to keep yourself safe from zoonotic disease?
Wash hands, wear gloves, clean up, and make sure that rabies vaccinations are up to date
What are the isolation protocols for a dog with respiratory disease or parvo?
Move the dog to the feline ward and call the shelter to come pick it up - also do PCR or SNAP tests to confirm
If a cat develops a URI while at ISU, what should be done?
move to a separate ward if possible and treat topical dermatologic issues
What yard should be used if you are walking potentially contagious dogs? Where is it located?
MDR yard - located across the drive from the back door by shelter medicine

What should you do for bite or scratch injuries?
Make sure the aggressive animals are contained or removed Stop the bleeding Clean and protect Get help Report Injury
What should you do if you get an injury from spraying drugs in your face or eyes?
Let the faculty/staff know and use the eye was stations
What should you do if you have an injury from a needle?
Let faculty/staff know if you inject yourself with any drug
How do you prevent injury from a scalpel blade?
Make sure you are attaching and removing blades carefully with needle drivers

What is the CVM emergency response plan for animals?
In the event of a spontaneous emergency, no attempt shall be made to evacuate animals until the safety of all affected humans has been ensured and the emergency is reported
In the event of an emergency in junior surgery, what is the evacuation plan?
People are the priority
Do not go and get animals until safety is ensured
Wait for the university official to clear
If holding a dog, then put a leash on it and take it with you
If holding a cat put in a carrier if possible or place in kennel or leave in exam room

Go to the volleyball courts/grassy area across from the wildlife care clinic
