Exam 1 - Canine Orchiectomy Flashcards
What technique is used in lab for a canine orchiectomy?
closed, pre-scrotal procedure
What is the role of the surgeon in the canine orchiectomy?
incision, find and remove the left testicle (first), close the skin layer
What is the role of the assistant surgeon in the canine orchiectomy?
find and remove the right testicle (second testicle) and close the subcutaneous layer
What prep is done for a canine orchiectomy?
clip, antiseptic scrub, intratesticular block, and finish scrub
What is the draping protocol for a canine orchiectomy?
place 4 huck towels, the first in front of you, and a paper drape - make sure to cut fenestration after placing it
How do you start a canine orchiectomy?
Push the testicle into the pre-scrotal area under the median raphe, then incise down to the level of parietal layer of the vaginal tunic
How do you know that you have reached the parietal layer of the vaginal tunic when making your prescrotal incision?
you will see a fat globule
Once you see the fat globule, what should you do?
enlarge the incision and push out the testicle
After the testicle is pushed through the incision, what is the next step?
Strip off the fascia around the cord
You have finished stripping off the fascia around the cord, how do you finish the procedure on this testicle?
Place three rochester-carmalt forceps on the cord 0.5 cm apart. Place a Miller’s knot in the crushed area of the most proximal forceps. Place a transfixation ligature in the location of the second forceps after you have moved it distally up the cord. Finally transect in between the first and second forceps, grab the cord with Brown-Adson forceps, remove the Rochester- Carmalts, check for hemostasis and place back into the sheath
What type of suture is used for a canine orchiectomy?
Polydioxanone 2-0 or 3-0
How many layers is the closure for a canine orchiectomy?
2-layer closure
What type of suture is used to close the incision site?
Polyglecaprone 25 (2-0 or 3-0)
What pattern is used to close the superficial subcutaneous layer? The intradermal layer?
Simple continuous and intradermal with a buried knot
