Exam 1 - Module 2 (ionic compounds and more) Flashcards
Ionic compounds
Ionic compounds always contain charges.
Charges must cancel out
Formula reflects smallest whole number ratio
Zinc is always what charge?
2+
How to balance out Ionic compound: Al3+ and O2-
Al2O3
Naming binary compounds
Name of cation (metal) + Base name of anion (nonmetal) + -ide
e.g. KCl -> Potassium Chloride
Name the following compounds: LiC2H3O2, Mg(OH)2, Al2(SO4)3, BaCr2O7
Lithium acetate, Magnesium Hydroxide, Aluminum Sulfate, Barium Dichromate
Ionic compounds with transition metals
More than one possible charge, use mathematic formula with roman numerals.
Only transition metals you wont use roman numerals on?
Zinc(2+) and silver(1+)
Naming Binary Molecular Compounds
Prefix + Name of first element + Prefix + Base name of second element +ide
E.g. Dinitrogen Monoxide N2O
Prefixes for molecular compound
1 - Mono
2- Di
3 - tri
4 - Tetra
5 - Penta
6 - Hexa
7 - Hepta
8 - Octa
9 - Nona
10 - Deca
If first element in binary molecular compound is just 1, do you put mono in front?
No!
e.g. CO = Carbon Monoxide, NOT Monocarbon Monoxide
Name this binary molecular compound: P4S10
Tetraphosphorus Decasulfide
Do you reduce binary molecular compounds?
NO!!!
Do you reduce ionic compounds?
YES!!!
If there is no charge, there is not:
An ion
Naming binary acids
Hydro + Base name of nonmetal +-ic + acid
E.g. HCl -> Hydrochloric acid
