Evolution- (3) Theories of Evolution Flashcards
What is the creationism theory?
“Everything is unalterable” (1000 B.C.E)
What did Carl Linneo do?
(First) He classified plants+ animals from simplest to most complex. This gave a foundation for development of theories of evolution.
What did Georges Cuvier do?
(second) Developed paleontology, understanding that each group of fossils in each stratum was different. He proposed the idea of “Catastrophism”
What is catastrophism?
Major events(such as natural disasters) would destroy an entire species, and an entirely new species would repopulate.
What did Charles Lyell do?
(Third) Proposed Uniformitarianism and inspired other scientists to explore evolution of populations
Whats uniformitarianism
Changes are slow + continous not catastrophic
Jean- Baptiste Lamarack
(fourth) Proposed Inheritance of acquired characteristics
Explain “Inheritance of acquired characteristics”
Species will increase in complexity until perfection is acheived. For ex.) Giraffe
How would Lamarack explain the evolution of giraffes?
Heavily used neck to reach higher branches, therefor they got longer and longer until perfect length.
What did charles Darwin do?
(Fifth) Proposed the idea of natural selection. Explained that all life descended from some unkown organism and continued to gradually modify.
Explain Neo- Darwinism
Integration of Darwin’s theory of evolution via natural selection w Gregor Mendel’s theory of genetics.
