Biodiversity- (7) Protists Flashcards
What type of cells do protists have
Multicellular- eukaryotic
What are the animal like protists (Protozoans)
The cercozoans, the ciliates, and the flagellates
How do animal like protists eat?
They are heterotrophs
Explain the cercozoans
ex) amoeba. No cell wall so they are flexible and change shape. Move + feed using Pseudopods (extensions of cytoplasm)
explain the ciliates
Ex) paramecium
Hairlike projections on surface (cilia). Cilia used for locomotion and feeding.
explain the flagellates
Have a long hair like projection called a flagellum. Used for locomotion and feeding.
Name the fungus like protists
Plasmodial slime moulds, cellular slime moulds, water moulds.
Explain plasmodial slime modes.
TIny slug-like organisms that creep over damp decaying plant material. Feed by engulfing small particles of food into their cytoplasm.
Explain cellular slime moulds
Exist as individual amoeboid cells w one nucleas each. Each cell feeds by ingesting tiny bacteria or yeast cells.
Explain water moulds
Resemble fungi. Most live on dead organic species but some species are parasites on fish, insects, and plants. They extend fungus like threads into their host and release digestive enzymes.
Types of plant-like protists
Diatoms, dinoflagellates, euglenoids
Explain diatoms
Type of phytoplankton (Aquatic), produce huge amounts of 02 at fast rates
Explain dinoflagellates
Type of phytoplankton, flagella @ 90 degrees angle from each other. Twirl to move like a propeller, reproduce quickly “algal blooms”.
Explain euglenoids
Autotrophs in sunlight + heterotrophs in dark. Use both photosynthesis and flagellum to obtain nutrients.
