Biodiversity- (4) Viruses Flashcards
What is a virus?
Structure that contains either DNA/RNA and is surrounded by a protective protien coating (capsid)
Are they alive?
No- they are unable to survive outside of a host cell, and are considered neither eukaryotic nor prokaryotic
How are viruses classified?
based on capsid, size, and shape
What are the 4 shapes of viruses?
Helical, Poyhedral, Spherical, and complex.
What are the two replication cycles of a virus
Lyctic and Lysogenic
Explain the lyctic cycle
Virus takes over host cell machinery to create virus protiens. 1. Attatchment and entry. 2) Replication. 3.)Assembly process. 4.) Release.
Explain the Lysogenic cycle
Virus integrates into host cells DNA and replicates “Pro-virus”. At this stage the virus is asymptomatic, but will eventually enter the lyctic cycle and show symptoms.
Replication patters and disease
Herpes cold sores- appear in lyctic cycle and are dormant in lysogenic cycle (Provirus)
Metabolism of prokaryotes
Anaerobic- No 02 needed for cellular respiration
Metabolism of Eukaryotes
Aerobic- 02 needed for cellular respiration
how do prokaryotes replicate
Binary fission
