Biodiversity- (9) Plants Flashcards
What are the three groups of plants
Non vascular, seedless vascular, seed producing and vascular plants
What’s a non vascular plant called
Bryophytes
explain bryophytes
first plants, evolved from algae. Include hornwarts, liverworts, and mosses. uses diffusion and osmosis to transport water and nutrients. grow low to the ground- hold water like a sponge.
what kind of roots do bryophytes have
rhizoids- root like structure- weaker- to increase surface area
Explain non vascular plants reproduction patterns
Utilize sporic reproduction aka alternation of generations. Alternate between the spore making and gametic making individuals
explain seedless vascular plants
Developed vascular tissue= could grow tall. Ferns, club mosses, horse tails.
How do seedless vascular plants reproduce
Sporophyte generation is dominant stage of life cycle. Only few remaining of this group
What are the two types of seed producing vascular plants
Gymnosperms and angiosperms
Why are seeds important?
They help a plant reproduce sexually, and also provide protection
What are examples of gymnosperms?
Conifers(Evergreens)
where are gymnosperms seeds located
exposed on the surface of cones, containing male or female gametes.
In conifer seeds- whats distinctive between male and female cones?
female- strong- long living
male- weak- short lived
what are some types of angiosperms
rose, grass, oak trees!
explain angiosperms use of flowers to reproduce
sexual reproduction(male/female gametes). Some bright and colourful (attract pollinators. Some non colorful(transport by wind)
explain angiosperms use of fruit for sexual reproduction
“ovaries of the flower” protect and disperse seeds. sweet- consume and disperse through fecal matter. Float- coconut travel across water. Sticky- Burs on animals
