Evolution 1 Flashcards
Adaptations
biological traits or characteristics that help an individual survive and reproduce in its habitat, they perform a specific function
Natural Selection
differential survival and reproduction of organisms as a result of the heritable differences between them
Three Essential Components to Natural Selection
- Individual Differences: variation among individuals
- Differential Reproduction: some have more offspring than others
- Heritability: successful traits will be passed down
Stabilizing Selection
selection against any sort of departure from the species typical adaptive design
Darwinian Fitness
average reproductive success of a genotype relative to alternate genotypes
Evolution
change in gene frequencies over generations
Sexual Selection
selects for behaviours and traits that increase the likelihood of reproducing
Two Components to Sexual Selection
- Female choice: being chosen by the opposite sex
2. Success in Combat: fight other potential candidates
Signs of Sexually Selected Traits
- Differs between sexes
2. Specific to breeding season
