Evidence (Evolution) Flashcards
What are paleontologists?
scientists who study fossils to learn about the past and compare features of species
use fossils to determine how a species has evolved
what are fossils?
preserved remains/traces of plants/animals. other organisms
ex. teeth, bones, impressions, leaves
Organisms that are hard to study the evolution of
bacteria
rock layers
generally the deeper the fossil is, the older it is
the fossil record
fossils and the order in which they appear
helps to determine how a species has evolved, divided and gone extinct
radiometric dating
method used by geologists to determine the age of rocks and fossils
measures the rate of decay of radioactive materials
oldest known rocks
4-5 billion years old
oldest know fossils
3-4 billion years old
reasons why the top layer of rock isn’t always the youngest
folding, breaking and uplifting of layers
vestigial structures
structures that no longer serve a purpose and slowly disappear
support the theory of evolution through natural selection
vestigial structures in humans
ear muscles
appendix
coccyx
some argue that the pinky finger is vestigial
vestigial structures in ostriches and penguins
wings- they don’t fly
vestigial structures in whales
pelvic bones but no rear legs to use them
vestigial structures in mole rats
eyes
similarities in genetic material between all organisms
if all life on earth evolved from a single cell, all organisms share some similarities in genetic material
