Ecological succession (Plants) Flashcards
1
Q
Ecological succession
A
process of change in the species structure of an ecological community with a stable climate
occurs when natural community is disturbed or new land becomes available
2
Q
Biological communities
A
always changing
ex. lakes which started out as dry land thousands of years ago
3
Q
Formation of lakes
A
- glaciers melt
- pioneer plants establish themselves in bare land around new lake
- forest grows
4, after centuries of plant matter dying and sinking to bottom of lake, lake becomes shallower - lake becomes marsh (aquatic to bog)
- marsh becomes forest of black spruce
4
Q
Optimal conditions
A
Every species grows best in certain environmental conditions
Species that grow most efficiently and produce most viable offspring are the most prominent in an ecosystem- continue to flourish as long as conditions are favourable
