Events of the cardiac cycle Flashcards
Does systole mean contraction or relaxation?
contraction
Does diastole mean contraction or relaxation?
relaxation
Are the valves in the heart unidirectional?
yes
What are the 4 main valves in the heart and where are they located?
tricuspid (av valve) from right atrium to right ventricle
Pulmonary valve right ventricle to lungs
bicuspid valve (av valves, mitral) left atrium to left ventricle
aortic valve from left ventricle to aorta
What are the 5 stages of the cardiac cycle and what happens in each stage?
atrial systole isovolumetric ventricular contraction ventricular ejection isovolumetric ventricular relaxation ventricular filling
What happens during atrial systole?
atrial pressure increases opening of AV valve, atria empty blood into ventricles
What happens during isovolumetric ventricular contraction
ventricular pressure increases causing AV valves to close. Ventricular pressure
What happens during ventricular ejection?
ventricular pressure > aortic pressure causing aortic valve to open and blood to be ejected
What happens during isovolumetric ventricular relaxation?
ventricular pressure atrial pressure so AV valve still closed
What is the first heart sound associated with and what noise is made?
AV valve closing causing Lub sound
What is the second heart sound associated with and what noise is made?
aortic/ pulmonary valve closure dup sound
What is stenosis?
narrowing which causes a steep pressure gradient, high flow across valve
