- Sedative and hypnotic
- Appears to act similar to GABA by depressing the activity of the brain stem reticular activating system
- No analgesic properties

- Known hypersensitivity
- Etomidate allergy

- Not intended for prolonged infusion due to suppression of cortisol and aldosterone production
