- pre-existing conditions, not lab generated
their participation may depend on: maternal autonomy, the type of study, the invasiveness of the procedure, the maternal and fetus safety, vulnerability, information/informed consent, and even vulnerability

- dependent on parents
- best practice: get the child’s consent as well
- if they can’t read or write we likely won’t ask the child’s consent.
People with cognitive disabilities
◦ Make sure that those with cognitive disabilities completely understand the conversation. Don’t use medical jargon or complicated terms
People in poverty
◦ From an ethical standpoint you shouldn’t pay them too much. Pay enough to make it worth while but not enough to seem like cohersion.
The elderly
-> older people are lonely, and we need to be careful with them
◦ They may want to be in a study just because it means someone will be coming to talk and be with them
‣ Be sure to manage expectations
‣ You may have to take extra time with them and that you plan on that extra time. They will want and need it.
People with terminal illnesses
◦ Make sure you are not overplaying on their hopes. They need to know that their results are not likely to help them in some scenarios, but more help people later on who experience it
Non-English speakers
-> make sure not to take advantage of them
◦ Make sure that everything at all points are properly translated
◦ Knowing to be aware of different dialects and accents
The rights as participants
• the right to privacy
◦ There are some areas like dorm rooms, bathroom, and classrooms that are not confidential environments violate this. You would need consent
• Right to confidentiality of data
◦ Keep all anonymous if you can and keep it in a place and way that it is safe even if someone finds it
• Right to withdraw at any time
◦ Should be allowed to stop at any time and still get the incentive attached.
‣ We are urged not to take advantage of this but anything can happen.

- serving needs of the agency
