Ethics
A group of moral principles or set of values that define or direct us to the right choice
Ethical standards 1-3
- PTA shall respect the inherent dignity and rights of all individuals
- PTAs shall be trustworthy and compassionate in addressing the rights and needs of patients
- PTAs shall make sound decisions along with the PT and within the boundaries of laws and regulations
Ethical standards 4-6
- PTAs shall demonstrate integrity in all professional relationships
- PTAs shall fulfill their legal and ethical obligations
- PTAs shall enhance their competence through lifelong acquisition and refinement of knowledge, skills, and abilities
Ethical standards 7-8
- PTAs shall support organizational behaviors and business practices that benefit patients and society
- PTAs shall participate in efforts to meet health needs of people locally, nationally, and globally
Challenges (6)

Altruism
Primary regard for or devotion to the interest of patients/clients, thus assuming the fiduciary responsibility of placing the needs of the patient/client ahead of the PTA’s self interest
Caring and compassion
- Compassion: the desire to identify with or sense something of another’s experience; a precursor of caring
- caring: the concern, empathy, and consideration for the needs and values of others
Continuing competence
Lifelong process of maintaining and documenting competence through ongoing self-assessment, development, and implementation of a personal learning plan, and subsequent reassessment
Duty
The commitment to meeting one’s obligations to provide effective physical therapy services to individual patients/clients, to serve the profession, and to positively influence the health of society
Integrity
The steadfast adherence to high ethical principles and standards; trustworthiness, fairness, doing what you say you will do, and speaking forth about why you do what you do
Responsibility
The active acceptance of the roles, obligations, and actions of the PTA, including behaviors that positively influence patient/client outcomes, the profession, and the health needs of society

Social responsibility
Social responsibility is the promotion of a mutual trust between the PTA, as a member of the profession, and the larger public that necessitates responding to societal needs for health and wellness

- expresses personal vision for future
- reflects personal values, goals, and purpose and how you want to operate
