Q

Diversity

A

Employees increasingly expect that they will work in a diverse workplace. Australia’s population is becoming more diverse, and this is re ected in the range of staff working in large organisations. Workplace diversity refers to the differences between employees in an organisation. Diversity encompasses race, gender, ethnic group, age, disability, sexual orientation, the terms of employment, personality, education and many other characteristics.
Successful organisations understand the need to manage diversity in the workplace and realise that embracing it can deliver many bene ts. Employees in a diverse workplace have a wide range of skills, talents, ideas and experience that allows the organisation to develop better products and improve customer service, because there is a better understanding of the demo- graphics of the marketplace.

Q

Explain two ethical and socially responsible processes that the human resource manager could implement when terminating staff.

A

One ethical process that the human resource manager could implement when terminating staff is a fair redundancy package. It is important and expected that all businesses not only follow the law in regards to redundancy packages but that they give all employees fair redundancy packages for what they brought to the organisation and that they are well informed of the redundancy beforehand and that the business helps them find work or gives them enough money and resources for them to find their own work. This is abiding by moral standards and doing the right thing in the interests of stakeholders especially employees.

A socially responsible process that the human resource manager could implement when terminating staff are offering extra services during termination.Businesses are able to offer services during termination for their employees, such as advice for finding new work, being a referee for the employee and offering them extra training to assist them in getting a job. This is going above and beyond ethical and legal expectations to give back to the stakeholder of employees.

Q

Mr Webster has identified 2 preferred options.
Improve the capabilities of the current staff
Purchase and import state-of-the-art equipment from Belgium.

Analyse the ethical and social responsibility issues associated with the two options.

A

One ethical issue with option one is a decent working environment for staff. When the staff are being trained and developed it is important that they are working in a safe and comfortable working environment, this is abiding by moral standards and doing the right thing in the interest of stakeholders, especially employees.

To be socially responsible and support the local economy, the business should not buy too many of its suppliers from Belgium as this does not inject any money into the local community, the business should still purchase most of its supplies from Australian businesses to support local businesses and the local economy.

To be socially responsible the organisation could offer benefits to the employees for completing training and development, this would encourage employees to increase their skills and knowledge base while also giving back to the stakeholder of employees.

One ethical management issue with importing state of the art equipment is to pay suppliers fairly and on time, the business would not only need to pay them the correct amount, they would need to pay them promptly and thank them for the product, this is abiding by moral standards and doing the right thing in the interest of stakeholders, especially suppliers.
