- monitor knowledge of area of study and recognize their own limits

- Towards participants and general public
- also responsible for profession + science
-research mustn’t harm anyone or be misused
-remind ppl of right to withdraw - don’t incentivise
-debriefs are essential
Integrity
(What you do when no one is looking)
-Honest and fair in all work
- avoid situations that seem lite exploiting ppl
-consider now research will be perceived by public
Why are Ethical Guidelines important?
- Protect participants - no harm to them
-encourage ppl lo participate in psychological research
-ensure power isn’t abused - so ppl trust the outcomes of psychological research
- so participants don’t portray psychology in a negative light to others.
When was milgrams study done?
1963
What was the aim of milgrams Study?
-to see if Germans are more obedient
- ww2 holocaust
What was the procedure of milgram’s study?
- 40 male participants - 20-50 yrs old
- unskilled-professional
- £4.50
- confederates = ‘Mr. Wallace’- the learner (always)
= ‘experimenter’ - learner strapped to chair - elective shock for eve wrong answer
-15V → 450V
(300V - learner pounded - no response to next question)
(315V - pounded but no further response)
What prods were given if participant hesitated?
Prod1: ‘please continue’ or ‘please go on’
Prod2: ‘the experiment requires that you continue’
Prod 3: ‘it is absolutely essential that you continue’
Prod 4: ‘you have no other choice, you must go on’
What were the findings of milgram’s research?
- no one stopped ↓300V 125 (5ppl) stopped at 300V)
- 65% continued to 450V (26 ppl)
-estimated 3% would go to 450V (about (2ppl)
-follow-up questioner → 85% happy to participate (34ppl)
Observation of participants in milgram’s Study:
- Etreme tension
- many seem to sweat, tremble, stutter, bile lips, groan, dig nails into hands
- 3 had full on seizures
