Essential Pharmacology Part 3 - drugs and therapeutics Flashcards
How many receptor subtypes does one signalling mol act on?
several receptor subtypes
What is a selective agonist?
drugs that activate only some of those receptors
What is a selective antagonist?
are drugs that block only some of those receptors
What is adrenaline?
neurotransmitter and hormone
released from adrenal medulla gland
binds to and activates all adrenoreceptors in the wide variety of tissues and organs
What receptors can adrenaline bind to and what is its effects?
Alpha 1 receptors in the eye- dilates pupil
Alpha 2 receptors in the gut and inhibits gastric secretion
Beta 1 receptors in heart and increases heart rate
Beta 2 receptors on smooth muscle lining the airways and dilate airways
What is salbutamol?
a selective beta2 agonist, used in treatment of asthma
What is propranolol?
a selective beta1 and beta2 antagonist, used in treatment of arrhythmias
